Overview
According to Japan's fleet replenishment program, it was planned to build eight heavy cruisers, which represented a further development of the Takao, Tone, and Mogami types. The ships' armament was to consist of twelve 203-mm guns in four turrets arranged in the classic layout, and their armor was to provide protection against 203-mm high-explosive shells. Subsequently, the number of ships was reduced to four, and then their construction was canceled altogether.
