Overview
The 1941 fleet replenishment program included four specialized AA cruisers to lead Akizuki-class destroyer flotillas. These "Project 815" ships were small cruisers with 5,800t standard displacement. An alternative considered converting Ōyodo-class cruisers or building new ones based on their hulls. The cruisers would carry twelve twin 100-mm/65 guns, matching three Akizuki-class destroyers' firepower. Enclosed mounts were planned amidships, semi-enclosed along sides.
