Overview
Amid a deteriorating international situation in the late 1930s, the Dutch naval leadership decided to build large warships. One variant of the new project envisioned an increased displacement, armament consisting of nine 240 mm guns, and a three-shaft power plant. The ship's speed would allow it to avoid encounters with battlecruisers, while its enhanced armament and armor would enable it to withstand direct engagements with a pair of heavy cruisers.
