Overview
Kitakami, a Kuma-class vessel, was built in Sasebo. With the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War, the cruiser covered Japanese troop landing operations. In 1941, Kitakami was converted into a torpedo cruiser, receiving an armament of ten quadruple 610-mm torpedo tubes. In 1941–42, Kitakami primarily performed convoy and training missions, after which it was converted into a high-speed transport. In this role, it escorted convoys to New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and Truk. In 1944, Kitakami sustained two torpedo hits from the British submarine HMS Templar. During repairs, the ship was converted into a carrier for Kaiten manned torpedoes. In July 1945, the cruiser was damaged by bombers from Task Force 38 and subsequently used as a tender. Kitakami was decommissioned from the fleet in November 1945.
