Overview
Shortly before World War II, Japan learned that the United States had begun designing large cruisers of the Alaska class. Almost immediately, Japanese shipbuilders began developing a ship that could counter the American cruisers. The project received the designation B-65, which, according to Japanese classification, allows it to be classified as a battlecruiser. In terms of architecture, the ship under development was similar to the Yamato-class battleships, and in one variant of the project, the armament consisted of 356-mm guns. The construction of the ships was canceled shortly after the Battle of Midway.
