Overview
During the 1930s, the Soviet Union sought to modernize and expand its naval capabilities, dispatching delegations to several leading naval powers to seek assistance in the design and construction of modern warships. One such delegation visited the American naval architecture firm Gibbs & Cox, which produced several proposals for the Soviets, including Project 1058.4. This design notably featured an aft-mounted quadruple 406 mm turret. However, following the Soviet invasion of Poland, all American assistance to the Soviet naval program came to an end.
