Overview
The Type 1936 destroyers differed from their predecessors in having a strengthened structure and a more reliable power plant. Following the Type 1936 came eight destroyers of the 1936A project, which were laid down in 1938–40. Z-23, the lead ship of the Type 1936A, was built at the Deschimag shipyard in Bremen. At the start of World War II, the destroyer conducted convoys in Norwegian waters and then in the Bay of Biscay. In June 1941, Z-23 returned to Norway, where it hunted Arctic convoys and laid minefields. In early 1943, the ship was again transferred to France. In December, during the Battle of the Bay of Biscay, the destroyer was heavily damaged by British bombers. The German command decided not to repair the ship, and Z-23 was struck from the fleet list. After the war, the French navy used the destroyer as a source of spare parts for captured ships.
