Overview
The Imperial Japanese Navy General Staff was dissatisfied that the Shiratsuyu class was inferior in speed and firepower to the Fubuki-class ships. As a result, the new Asashio-class destroyers were built with a design significantly altered from their predecessors. Meeting the new requirements was only possible if the displacement exceeded the limits of the London Naval Treaty, but by this time Japan had already privately abandoned compliance with them. The lead ship of the class, Asashio, was built in Sasebo. During World War II, the destroyer participated in the landings in the Philippines and Malaya, fought in the Badung Strait, and in the battles of Midway and Guadalcanal. The destroyer Asashio was sunk by American bombers in the Battle of the Bismarck Sea on March 3, 1943.
