Overview
The Akizuki-class destroyers were planned as specialized anti-aircraft ships for escorting fast carrier task forces. Their primary armament was to consist of eight state-of-the-art 100mm/65 caliber guns, around which the ship was essentially designed. The destroyers turned out to be significantly larger than their predecessors. The lead ship, Akizuki, was built in Maizuru. During World War II, the destroyer participated in the Battle of the Eastern Solomons and the Guadalcanal Campaign, the Battle of the Philippine Sea, and the Battle of Leyte Gulf. During the Battle off Cape Engaño on October 25, 1944, Akizuki was sunk by an American torpedo.
