Overview
When the last American cruisers from World War II were decommissioned, the U.S. Navy was left with only one gun suitable for shore bombardment — the 127mm/54 Mk.42. However, in both range and power, it was inferior to its Soviet counterparts. To solve this problem, a program was launched to create a universal automatic large-caliber gun that would be light enough to be installed even on destroyers. Initially, it was assumed the gun's caliber would be 175 mm, but in the early 1970s, it was increased to 203 mm. The resulting 203mm/55 Mk.71 gun successfully passed tests, but the program was canceled due to budget constraints. Had the program been successfully completed, this gun could have been used to rearm hypothetical anti-aircraft artillery cruisers, which were developments of the CL-154 and Atlanta-class projects.
