Overview
The first drafts for the battleship project, numbered 24, began in January 1941. Initially, the ship repeated the original Project 23 but proposed an increase in anti-aircraft artillery and enhanced armor. In 1944, the requirements changed: universal artillery appeared in the project, replacing the secondary battery, and anti-torpedo protection and end protection were strengthened. In December 1945, the operational-technical specifications were approved, according to which the ship's primary purpose was to destroy enemy surface ships of all classes in naval battles, both near and far from its shores. According to the ship design plan from 1946, the development of the preliminary design was to begin in 1951, but work on the new battleship was already underway at TsKB-L since 1948. Among other things, variants with 457 mm main battery guns were considered. In 1950, the main variant of the pre-draft project was approved, but there was no place to build a ship with a displacement of 70,000 tons, and by that time, the country's leadership had lost interest in large surface ships.
