Overview
In the 1930s, as part of strengthening the Soviet fleet and later within Stalin's 'large fleet' program, several large artillery ships were designed, including battleships. At the same time, American experience in building such ships was actively studied. In 1938, a special commission established contacts with an American firm that undertook to develop a project based on Soviet specifications. As a result, a hybrid battleship-aircraft carrier project was developed, one variant of which proposed armament of twelve 406 mm guns in four turrets. It was planned to build two such ships—one in the USA and one in the USSR. Had the project been accepted, the ship built in the USSR would have received Soviet armament and aircraft.
