Overview
Following the review of the Japanese fleet development plan, new battleships and battlecruisers were ordered. The Kii-class battleships were to be equipped with ten 410-mm guns in five turrets, while the No. 13-class battlecruiser was intended to have 457-mm armament. Concurrently, the L project was developed—an enlarged variant of the Kii-class battleship, also armed with five main battery turrets but with 457-mm guns. However, this project exceeded the displacement of the Kii-class battleships by 9,000 tons, which would have led to a significant increase in its cost. The appearance of both the Kii-class and these ships was prevented by the Washington Conference, which resulted in a temporary ban on battleship construction and a limitation on their total tonnage.
