Overview
A few years after the laying of Project 23 ships, the development of the next generation of battleships began. The new project, numbered 24, proposed an increase in the number of anti-aircraft guns and enhanced armor, and later universal artillery instead of the secondary battery. In December 1945, the technical specifications were approved, and in 1948, TsKB-L began work on the project. In 1950, one of the pre-draft variants of the project was accepted by the Ministry of Shipbuilding and the Main Directorate of Shipbuilding as the main one. For main battery artillery, the ship carried nine 406 mm B-52 guns in triple turrets. A weak point, as with all large projects of that time, was the anti-aircraft artillery: it was assumed that battleships would be covered by escort ships. Had Project 24 ships been completed and commissioned, modern ZIF-75 and 2M-3 anti-aircraft mounts would have been installed on them in the late 1950s.
