Overview
As part of the work on designing the Project 82 heavy cruiser, by order of the Ministry of Shipbuilding, TsNII-45 began developing sketches of a so-called small battleship. A feature of such a battleship's armor would be reinforced bow protection, ensuring defense against enemy fire at sharp angles. In total, nine pre-draft projects of such a ship were developed in 1951-52. One of the variants recommended by TsNII-45 for further development carried armament of two triple turrets with 180 mm guns. At the end of 1952 and beginning of 1953, the set of materials for the small battleship was reviewed by the Main Directorate of Shipbuilding. However, soon the construction of heavy artillery ships ceased to be relevant, and the project was not realized.
