Overview
In 1935, against the backdrop of tense international relations, the shipbuilding policy of the USSR was adjusted in favor of constructing modern heavy ships. In February 1936, technical specifications were formed for the design of large combat ships, including a battleship for the Pacific Ocean. In June 1936, the final characteristics of the future battleship were determined: nine 406 mm guns in three linearly elevated turrets, twelve 152 mm guns in six turrets as secondary armament. Work on the project was carried out in parallel by KB-4 and TsKBS-1, and by October 1936, the preliminary designs were completed. In early 1937, information was received about battleships under construction in Germany and Japan, whose displacement, according to estimates, was about 50,000 tons. After this, KB-4 continued refining the project, increasing its protection and armament, which ultimately led to the appearance of the 'Soviet Union'-class battleships.
