Overview
In 1916, Germany returned to designing a new type of battleship. The main task was to increase the ships' firepower. In April, three preliminary draft projects based on the Bayern battleship were presented to Kaiser Wilhelm II. One of the projects differed from the others by having five main battery turrets, three of which were located in the stern. However, the additional turret was positioned too high, making the entire ship unstable due to a high center of gravity. The problem could be solved by increasing the ship's length and lowering two turrets to a lower deck. The ship's armament in one variant was envisaged as five triple turrets with 350 mm guns—such turrets had been proposed for the future Bayern by Grand Admiral Alfred von Tirpitz in 1912. As a result of Germany's defeat in World War I, ships according to these designs were not laid down.
