Overview
After the Russo-Japanese War, Japan planned to build eight battleships and eight fast armored cruisers. Slightly later, the armored cruisers were replaced with battleships, and the number of ships was reduced. However, after the start of World War I, funding increased and the design of battlecruisers began. Between 1916 and 1918, about twenty preliminary design variants were developed. Between 1920 and 1921, four ships based on the design designated B-64 were laid down, but construction was canceled according to the decisions of the Washington Naval Conference. Japan was permitted to convert two battlecruisers into aircraft carriers, and in 1923 the conversion of the Amagi began. In September, the hull of the Amagi, which was on the slipways in Yokosuka, was destroyed by the Great Kantō earthquake.
