Overview
The fourth South Dakota-class battleship, USS Alabama, was laid down in February 1940 and commissioned in August 1942. In 1943, she was temporarily transferred to the British Home Fleet to escort polar convoys. Later, she was sent to the Pacific to participate in operations against Japan. Alabama took part in the Mariana Islands campaign and the Philippine operation, and in 1945, she supported the Okinawa landing. Today, the battleship is a museum ship located in Mobile Bay, Alabama.
