Overview
In February 1936, on assignment from the Directorate of Naval Forces of the Red Army, technical specifications were drawn up for the design of new heavy warships. The design of battleships was handled by Design Bureau No. 4 of the Baltic Shipyard. The battleship project received the designation "Type A battleship." In June, the characteristics of the future ship were finalized: 406 mm main caliber guns in three turrets with a superfiring arrangement, and 152 mm guns as secondary armament. If such a ship had been built, it would have undergone modernization after the Great Patriotic War. It is assumed that during the work, the anti-mine artillery and the aft main caliber turret would have been replaced with universal gun mounts, while the remaining main caliber guns would have been replaced with 55-caliber 305 mm guns.
