Overview
In the spring of 1937, the Soviet leadership learned that Germany and Japan were building new battleships with higher characteristics than the existing Soviet project. In connection with this, the design bureau was tasked with increasing the displacement and maximum speed of the future ship without regard to treaty limitations. The battleships of Project 23 (Sovetsky Soyuz class) were laid down in the USSR between 1938 and 1940. Construction was delayed, and in July 1941, it was halted by a decree of the State Defense Committee.
