Overview
In late 1942, during Operation Torch in North Africa, the unfinished battleship Jean Bart was captured by Allied forces. At that moment, only one main battery turret was installed on the ship—and representatives of the French Resistance tried to secure its completion in the United States. French engineers proposed a project that could be implemented in a short time. Since the main battery guns from the Jean Bart were used to replace damaged artillery on her sister ship Richelieu, the plan was to install 340 mm guns from the battleship Lorraine into the ship's single turret. Instead of a second main battery turret, it was proposed to equip the ship with twin 127 mm American-made dual-purpose mounts, twenty quadruple Bofors mounts, and other guns.
