Overview
Plans for the construction of the Yamato-class battleships envisioned building eight ships by 1950. In early 1941, the program was adjusted: based on intelligence data about the construction of large ships in the United States, the Imperial Japanese Navy General Staff requested the construction of new battleships. Most of the ships were intended to be built according to an improved design based on the Yamato class—with 510 mm main battery artillery. The variant with eight main battery guns in four turrets had a standard displacement of 86,730 tons—a quarter more than that of the Yamato. Two super-battleships were assigned hull numbers 798 and 799, but the project was not realized due to Japan's defeat in the war.
