Overview
In winter 1939-40, the French Naval General Staff considered several designs for ships to counter new German battleships. Proposals varied from 9-12 guns of 380mm, 406mm or 420mm caliber. One design developed the Richelieu and Gascogne types with nine 406mm guns in three turrets. Two battleships of this class were planned for 1941 construction, with four total envisioned. Had they been completed postwar, they would have received modern AA: US 127mm/54 guns and new 57mm ACAD mounts.
