Overview
In mid-1939, several preliminary designs for a 45,000-ton battleship were presented to the U.S. Navy leadership. The designs, indexed from BB65A to BB65E, differed in the number and arrangement of armament, the thickness of the armor belt, and speed. Design BB65D envisioned a battleship with 12 guns of 406 mm caliber. For its secondary battery, the battleship was to carry twin mounts of 152 mm guns, which would have strengthened its anti-aircraft defense. The design was not realized, and its further development led to the emergence of the Montana-class battleships.
