Overview
Musashi, the second Yamato-class battleship, was built in Nagasaki at the Mitsubishi shipyard. In 1943, the ship became the flagship of the Combined Fleet. In early 1943, Musashi was transferred to Truk, Japan's main naval base in the South Pacific theater of operations, and was primarily used for patrol operations. In early 1944, the battleship sustained a torpedo hit and returned to Japan for repairs. Musashi participated in the Battle of the Philippine Sea. During the Battle of Leyte Gulf on October 24, 1944, the battleship was sunk by American carrier-based bombers and torpedo bombers, sustaining approximately 19 torpedo and 17 bomb hits.
