Overview
In 1916, as part of fleet development, the Japanese parliament authorized the construction of two battlecruisers in addition to the Kongō-class ships. That same year, Japanese naval architects presented four battlecruiser designs, which differed in the power of their propulsion plants and specific elements of their armor. A characteristic feature of these designs was their six-shaft propulsion system. After a series of refinements, they became the basis for the Amagi-class battlecruisers.
