Overview
The Washington Naval Treaty imposed significant restrictions on the size of the Japanese battleship fleet. To maintain defensive capabilities, Japan was once again forced to compensate for the small number of ships with their high performance. In 1934, the Japanese navy decided to abandon displacement limitations in order to definitively surpass American battleships in combat power. In October 1934, the Imperial Japanese Navy General Staff issued technical specifications for designing a battleship with a displacement of 69,500 tons. Some of the developed designs envisioned a ship armed with three turrets in the bow, each intended to mount three 410-mm guns. The secondary armament consisted of 155-mm guns. The propulsion system was a combined diesel-steam turbine arrangement. This project was not realized, and its further refinement led to the emergence of the Yamato-class battleships.
