Overview

After developing the Von der Tann battlecruiser, it was decided to build the next ship according to an improved design. At the insistence of Grand Admiral Alfred von Tirpitz, the number of main battery turrets was increased to five. The additional turret was located superfiring in the stern—following the example of the Kaiser-class battleships. Armor was also strengthened, leading to a significant increase in displacement. SMS Moltke was built at the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg. During World War I, the ship participated in raids on Yarmouth, Lowestoft, Scarborough, and Hartlepool, the Battle of the Heligoland Bight, the Battle of Dogger Bank, the attempt to break into the Gulf of Riga, the Battle of Jutland, and Operation Albion. After Germany's capitulation, Moltke moved to Scapa Flow, where it was scuttled by its crew on June 21, 1919.
