Overview

Even before the Russo-Japanese War, Japan began developing cruisers with a main battery caliber characteristic of battleships. In 1905, two Tsukuba-class cruisers were laid down, each carrying four 305-mm guns. The construction of significantly more powerful and faster battlecruisers in Great Britain led to the development of similar vessels in Japan. Naval architect Yuzuru Hiraga prepared three preliminary design studies for a battlecruiser: B-39, B-40, and B-41. Design B-40 proposed an armament of 356-mm guns in three twin turrets, two of which were to be located aft. Additionally, sixteen 152-mm guns were planned for installation in casemates. The project was not realized, as it was decided to order a battlecruiser from Great Britain.
