Overview
USS Arkansas, the second ship of the Wyoming class, was built in Camden, New Jersey. During World War I, it was part of the 9th Battleship Division, which was based at Scapa Flow and was part of the British fleet. During World War II, the ship participated in the Neutrality Patrol, and after the US entered the war, it escorted convoys in the Atlantic. In 1944, the battleship took part in the landings in Normandy and Southern France, in 1945 — in the landings on Iwo Jima and Okinawa. After the war, Arkansas transported soldiers to America. In July 1946, the ship was used in nuclear tests at Bikini Atoll, during which it capsized and sank. During its service, the battleship received four battle stars.
