Overview

In 1908, a debate unfolded in the US Navy: following the example of Great Britain, the Americans planned to arm battleships with a larger caliber. However, due to infrastructure problems and a lack of free space for basing ships with 356-mm guns, it was decided to keep the main caliber of 305 mm on the battleships under construction, but increase the number of guns to 12. The battleship Wyoming became the flagship of the Atlantic Fleet. The ship participated in the occupation of Veracruz, and after the US entered World War I, as part of the 9th Battleship Division, it reinforced the British fleet, moving to Scapa Flow: it escorted convoys and patrolled the North Sea. In 1919–29, Wyoming was the flagship first of the Pacific Fleet and then of the Atlantic Fleet, participated in maneuvers and exercises, and later was disarmed and reclassified as a training artillery ship AG-17. After the start of World War II, the battleship performed patrol duties.
