Overview

As a result of changes in the German naval law, it was decided to build battleships to replace old armored ships. The new battleship project represented a step forward: steam turbines were used, and the main battery turrets were arranged more rationally. The ship lost one turret compared to its predecessors, but the two aft turrets were now in a superfiring arrangement, and the two wing turrets were placed diagonally. SMS Kaiser, the lead ship of its class, was built in Kiel and launched on the Kaiser's birthday, March 22, 1911. After the start of World War I, the ship covered the raid on Scarborough and Hartlepool and conducted patrol operations. During the Battle of Jutland, the battleship sank the destroyer HMS Nomad and the cruiser HMS Defence, and inflicted heavy damage on the battleship Warspite. In September 1917, the battleship participated in Operation Albion in the Baltic, disabling the destroyer Grom. After Germany's capitulation, Kaiser moved to Scapa Flow, where it was scuttled by its crew on June 21, 1919.
