According to the Treaty of Versailles, the German navy was prohibited from including ships with a displacement of more than 10,000 tons. However, after World War I, Germany was left with several hundred incomplete ships, some of which were finished and sold abroad. Sweden, keen to strengthen its fleet, even considered acquiring and completing one of these German battleships.
