Overview
In 1935, the Anglo-German Naval Agreement was signed, which freed Germany's hands in terms of fleet construction. In 1938–39, Admiral Erich Raeder developed a plan for modernizing and expanding the fleet, with the ultimate goal of defeating the British fleet in a future war. The core of the fleet was to be six new battleships, representing a modernized version of the Bismarck-class ships with a diesel power plant and increased gun caliber. In 1939, the first preliminary draft variants of ships armed with 406 mm guns were presented. The project, named H-39 after the lead ship's index and the year of development. In April 1939, the construction of two ships of this type was ordered, and in May—four more. In July, the first ship was laid down at the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg, and in September, construction began on the second in Bremen. With the start of World War II, construction was suspended, and by the end of 1941, it was canceled altogether.
