Overview
When designing the H battleship, the main requirement was firepower superior to all existing analogues in the world. The leadership insisted on a 420 mm caliber, which would surpass the main caliber of battleships of any other country (the true caliber of the Yamato's guns became known to the world only after the end of World War II). However, installing guns of such caliber on a ship would violate the Washington Naval Treaty, which Germany had pledged to adhere to. A possible solution would have been to switch to a 406 mm caliber, but such guns did not exist in Germany, and their development would have taken a long time. Another option envisaged increasing the number of 380 mm guns to twelve—in four triple turrets. In the end, the naval leadership settled on 406 mm guns, and the variant with twelve 380 mm guns was not realized.
