Overview
The design for the new battleship was selected from 24 options developed since 1934. The ship received a fully turbine-powered propulsion system. The hull was refined in a test basin to give it an optimal hydrodynamic form, leading to the creation of a massive bulbous bow. To build such a large ship, it was necessary to deepen the existing dry docks and construct a vessel for transporting the turrets. The building slip and dock were enclosed by a high fence. Yamato, the lead ship of the class, was built in Kure. Throughout 1942, the ship served as the flagship of the Japanese Combined Fleet. From the bridge of the Yamato, Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto directed the Battle of Midway. In December 1943, the battleship was torpedoed by an American submarine and put in for repairs. In October 1944, Yamato took part in the Battle of Leyte Gulf, where it fought near Samar Island against American escort carriers. Yamato was sunk off the coast of Kyushu during Operation Ten-Go by a massive strike from U.S. Navy aircraft on April 7, 1945.
