Overview
After studying the loss of the battleship Bismarck and the damage to the battleship Scharnhorst in July 1941, the German naval leadership conducted a review of the under-construction H and J ships. One requirement was to strengthen horizontal armor while maintaining a draft of 11.5 m for operations in the shallow North Sea. During development, the project acquired a triple bottom and an increased number of watertight compartments for protection against underwater explosions. Additionally, it was planned to increase the main battery caliber to give the new battleships a significant advantage over British and American battleships. The changes introduced into the project were significant, and the construction of the two already laid-down ships was discontinued. It was assumed that ships according to the new project would be laid down in 1942. However, soon thereafter, construction for the German navy was reoriented towards submarines, and no new battleships were laid down.
