Overview
In October 1943, Walter-Werke proposed to the German navy a project for a submarine with a Walter closed-cycle engine running on hydrogen peroxide. Such an engine worked equally well both surfaced and submerged. In May 1944, the Kriegsmarine Main Committee for Shipbuilding presented a production plan providing for the construction of submarines, which were assigned the index XXVIW. Individual modules for the hulls were to be manufactured at different shipyards. By the end of the war, sections for four submarines had been produced: from U-4501 to U-4504.
