Overview
The main feature of World War II submarines was that they spent most of their time on the surface. The first truly 'submarine' was the German Type XXI project. These submarines were specifically designed to spend most of their time submerged. They were equipped with improved battery capacity and a snorkel—a device for underwater diesel operation. The boats were also equipped with quiet electric motors for stealthy approach to targets. U-2501, the lead submarine of the series, was built in Hamburg. During its short service, the boat was in Kiel and Danzig. U-2501 did not participate in war patrols and was scuttled in May 1945 in Hamburg.
