Overview
In early 1935, the head of the Submarine Shipbuilding Department of the Research Institute of Military Shipbuilding, M. A. Rudnitsky, proposed a submarine project designated KE-9 (Cruiser-Squadron). In January 1936, the preliminary design was approved. The submarine K-1 ('Kreyserskaya'), the lead submarine of the XIV series, was built at Plant No. 194 in Leningrad and joined the Red Banner Baltic Fleet. In the summer of 1940, K-1 transited the White Sea-Baltic Canal and was assigned to the 1st Division of the Submarine Brigade of the Northern Fleet. The submarine made 16 combat patrols totaling 196 days. Five ships and two warships were lost on the mines it laid. The submarine was lost in 1943 during a patrol near Novaya Zemlya. It is presumed that K-1 was sunk by a German submarine.
