Overview
The project for ocean-going Type IX submarines appeared as a development of the Type I, built in 1936. The Type IX was developed in 1935–36 for long-range raids, particularly to the Caribbean Sea and the US coast. Submarines of this type proved to be powerful and reliable, with the largest series being the IXC/40. The lead submarine of the series, U-190, was built in Bremen. The boat made six war patrols in 1942–45, sinking two Allied ships. In May 1945, the boat surrendered to a Canadian frigate and was officially enlisted in the Canadian navy as a prize. In July 1947, U-190 was scuttled during exercises.
