Overview
At the end of 1944, the USSR Navy received materials on the German submarine U-250, which was sunk in the Gulf of Finland and then raised from the bottom. After studying the captured submarine, the tactical-technical assignment for the development of Project 613 submarines was approved. The unfulfilled Project 608 was taken as the basis, and the development was carried out by TsKB-18. In August 1946, the tactical-technical assignment was issued, and two years later, the technical project was approved by the USSR Government. When developing the theoretical drawings, special attention was paid to ensuring high speed characteristics in the submerged position. Project 613 submarines became the most mass-produced submarines of the USSR Navy. S-189 was built at Plant No. 189 named after Ordzhonikidze in Leningrad and spent its entire service on the Baltic. The submarine participated in combat sorties and testing new weapons at the Ladoga Lake test site. In 1970-72, it three times received the title 'Excellent Ship.'
