Overview
The third submarine of the Otsu-Gata B3 type was built in Yokosuka. I-56 participated in the defense of the Philippine Islands and the Battle of Leyte Gulf, during which it sustained damage. In 1944, the submarine was converted to carry Kaitens — manned torpedoes. In April 1945, during the Battle of Okinawa, I-56 went missing. It is presumed to have been sunk by the escort of the American battleship Missouri.
