Overview
In the early 1930s, the Y3 project, or Aurore type, was developed. These submarines differed from their predecessors by having a hull one and a half times larger, enhanced armament, and increased seaworthiness. Only the lead submarine of the type was completed before France's capitulation. L'Africaine was laid down in September 1938 in Le Trait. In an unfinished state, L'Africaine was captured by German forces, receiving the designation UF 1. Construction progressed slowly, and before retreating from Normandy, the Germans attempted to blow up the unfinished submarine. After the war, L'Africaine was completed according to a modified French design and became part of the 1st Submarine Squadron.
