Overview
After the end of the First World War, Germany was prohibited from developing and building submarines. To circumvent these restrictions, German shipbuilders founded the design firm Ingenieurskantoor voor Scheepsbouw in the Netherlands in 1922. It was intended to develop submarine projects for export, testing the best options for the future German submarine fleet. The firm developed several submarine projects based on the UG type for different countries. One such submarine was purchased by the Turkish government, after which Turkey ordered the construction of submarines from Germany based on an improved design. The submarine Saldıray was laid down in Kiel at the Germaniawerft shipyard in February 1937 and launched in July 1938. In April of the following year, the boat moved to Turkey, where it entered service. The submarine served in the Turkish Navy until 1958.
