Overview
Before the start of the Great Patriotic War, the leadership of the USSR took steps to strengthen the naval forces in light of a possible clash with Germany. Among other things, the USSR purchased ships, naval armament, and equipment from Germany itself. In 1940, the unfinished heavy cruiser Lützow was acquired, which was later renamed 'Petropavlovsk.' The unfinished ship participated in the defense of Leningrad, firing from its four mounted guns. In September 1941, due to damage received, the cruiser grounded. In the summer of 1942, the ship was raised and towed down the Neva to Plant No. 189 named after Ordzhonikidze. The repaired ship continued to be used as a floating battery in the Leningrad defense system. Later, the ship was renamed 'Tallinn,' and after the war, there were plans to complete it using the mechanisms of the cruiser Seydlitz and 180 mm artillery.
