Overview
At the beginning of August 1937, the command of the Soviet fleet presented an updated plan for the construction of combat ships, which included light cruisers of a new type. The project received the index 68, and its development was carried out by TsKB-17. A total of 26 Project 68 cruisers were planned to be built in 1938-47. 'Chapayev' was laid down in October 1939 at Plant No. 189 named after Ordzhonikidze in Leningrad, and in April 1941, the cruiser was launched. With the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, the construction of the ships was suspended—the hulls were mothballed. After the war, the ship was completed according to the adjusted Project 68K and entered service in May 1950. It served as part of the Baltic Fleet.
