Overview
The Project 68-bis cruiser 'Mikhail Kutuzov' was built in Nikolaev. The ship served as part of the 50th Cruiser Division of the Black Sea Fleet, based in Sevastopol. In 1955, the first Soviet shipborne helicopter, the Ka-15, was tested on the cruiser. In 1967-68, 'Mikhail Kutuzov' performed a combat mission in the Mediterranean during the Arab-Israeli conflict, providing assistance to the armed forces of Egypt and Syria. In 1969, the cruiser became the flagship of the 30th Division of the Black Sea Fleet. In 1979-86, the ship underwent modernization under Project 68A, but the following year, it was transferred to the reserve. It was decommissioned in 1992 and later converted into a museum ship in Novorossiysk.
