Overview
After the laying of the 'Ishmael'-class battlecruisers, the Naval General Staff began working on the next generation of battleships. During the research, the concept of the future ship was defined: it was to carry 406 mm guns and have a speed of at least 25 knots. Due to the outbreak of World War I, plans to build such ships had to be postponed, and the design of new battleships was resumed only at the end of 1916, reflecting on the experience of recent naval battles. In October 1916, in Nikolayev, naval engineer V. P. Kostenko began designing the future battleship. Four variants of the battleship were developed, differing in armament schemes, the number of main battery guns, speed, and armor protection. Variant No. 2 was a compromise in all respects: relatively high speed combined with good armor protection, the main battery consisted of nine guns in three turrets, and the secondary battery caliber was increased to 152 mm.
